89-Year Old Man bitten by Pit Bull, Owner Arrested

You may have seen a kindly older gentleman riding his scooter on the Piner Creek trail near Marlo road “walking” his black lab Luna.   There was an article in the PD that he and his dog were attached by a Pit Bull and the owner arrested.

Please join us in wishing Bill and Luna a speedy recovery from his injuries.

New Creek Signs - How are they funded in these hard times?

Creek Crossing Sign Installation in Santa Rosa CA

Both Piner and Palin Creeks run thru our neighborhood.  Do you know which  is which?  This is part of an email issued by the The City of Santa Rosa and the Sonoma County Water Agency Creek Stewardship Program.

….I will venture that many of you have already spotted the new creek signs being installed around Santa Rosa with the simple message of “Ours to protect.” I’ve attached a picture of one creek sign installation. Knowing the name of a creek is one of the first steps in beginning to appreciate the important connections we have between our actions and the health of our waterways.  Not only will the signs help citizens learn the geography of creeks (for example, that Piner Creek at Hopper Avenue is the same creek that later crosses Piner Road and Coffey Lane, and then Marlow, Guerneville, and Fulton Roads), the signs are also designed to aid emergency response to an exact location for reports of water pollution, medical emergencies and other incidents.

One question asked is “how can the City justify spending money on signs during this budget crunch?”  The answer is that the City is required by its storm water permit to conduct public education and outreach to increase the community’s knowledge of the storm drain system and the impacts of urban storm water runoff.  An ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure, creek crossing signs have proven to be an effective and inexpensive way to impart knowledge and encourage behavioral changes that will help protect our creeks.  Funding for the signs comes from a parcel assessment based on the amount of impervious surface (i.e. pavement and rooftops) on a property.  The money generated through this assessment is required to go towards creek protection and restoration.  It can’t be used for schools, Police, streetlights, or potholes.

This round of signs will cover 65 of the more than 200 street crossings of our creeks.  The signs are being placed on 22 of the 30+ creeks that run through the City.  Hopefully, we can continue the project with another batch of signs next year.  Please let me know if there is a particular creek crossing you know of that could benefit from a sign.  Caltrans regulations, traffic patterns, and existing traffic signs limit the possibility of creek signs at some crossings. …..

What fish live in Santa Rosa Creek? Join biologists on Saturday, 5/22/2010…

What fish actually live in Santa Rosa Creek? Join NOAA Fisheries biologists to find out on Saturday, May 22, 2010, as they sample for fish along the Prince Memorial Greenway. The biologists will show different methods of netting fish, explain the life cycles and interactions of the various species, and have underwater viewing scopes available for our use. This is a fascinating experience for youth of all ages as well as being informative for fly casters or bait fishers.

Nightingale Drive Drug Bust; Neighbors meet with Enforcement Officers

A search of a home on Nightingale Drive last week led to 2 arrests along with seizure of Cocaine, Heroin and Meth.  Also found were signs of sales including a scale, packaging materials and money.  The 2 men arrested were reported to be renters in the home.  The home owner says the renters had only lived there for a few weeks and he had no knowledge of the activity.  Many of our neighbors are outraged that this kind of behavior would be happening in our neighborhood.    Sgt Bertoli from the Sonoma county sheriff’s department met with a gathering of neighbors last night to discuss what happened and answer questions.  Our beat officer from the Santa Rosa police department and the home owner were also present and spoke at the meeting.

Sgt Bertoli described a 3 month long investigation that originated in San Jose.  He said the men arrested are believed to be “runners”.  He did not believe any drugs were sold directly out of the house; that activity took place elsewhere.  He praised our community for taking an active interest in protecting ourselves and mentioned one resident had even confronted one of the surveillance officers.
